Significance of 21st June:



The International Day of Yoga is a day in recognition of Yoga that is celebrated around the world annually on 21 June following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014. As Yoga exercises have shown significant benefits for physical and mental well-being, it was considered important by the UN to globally promote this wellness practice, which originated in ancient India. In India, International Yoga Day is celebrated by the Ministry of AYUSH.


World Hydrography Day is observed on 21 June every year to increase public awareness about hydrography science. Every year the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) and its international members celebrate this day. 


Every year World Music Day is celebrated on 21 June to promote music on an international level and is a way to establish global harmony through music.


1948- Chakravarti Rajagopalachari served as a Governor-General of India from 21 June 1948 to 26 January 1950.

1977- Jyoti Basu served as the 6th and longest serving Chief Minister of West Bengal from 21 June 1977 to 5 November 2000.

1991- P.V. Narasimha Rao becomes Prime Minister of India as head of the Congress minority government from 21 June 1991 to 16 May 1996.

2004- SpaceShipOne becomes the first privately funded spaceplane to achieve spaceflight.

2006- Pluto's newly discovered moons are officially named Nix and Hydra.

1940- Bikash Bhattacharjee was an Indian artist known for his work in realism. His subject matter often depicted the life of the average middle-class Bengali.

1969- Dibakar Banerjee, Indian film director, screenwriter, producer and advertisement-filmmaker known for his work in Hindi films.

1983- Wing Commander, Abhinandan Varthaman's MiG-21 Bison fighter jet was shot down during an aerial dogfight in February 2019.

1940- Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was an Indian physician who founded the Hindutva paramilitary organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in Nagpur in 1925.

2011- Kothapalli Jayashankar was an Indian academic and Social Activist. He was a leading ideologue of the Telangana Movement.

2012- Abid Hussain was an Indian economist, civil servant and diplomat. He was India's ambassador to the United States of America from 1990 to 1992.
