*Events* that took place on this day: 
 
*Pi Day* is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant *π (pi).* Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures of π. It was *founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw,* an employee of the Exploratorium.


1780- American Revolutionary War:  *Spanish forces capture Fort Charlotte* in Mobile, Alabama.

1794 - *Eli Whitney* is granted a patent for the  *cotton gin* (a machine that quickly and easily separates cotton fibers from their seeds).

1864- *Sir Samuel White Baker* was an English Explorer, author, and administrator who *explored the Upper Nile and discovered Lake Albert.*

1900- *The Gold Standard Act* is ratified, placing the United States currency on the gold standard.

1931- *Alam Ara* was released. It was the first Indian sound film and was directed by Ardeshir Irani.

1939- *Slovakia* declares independence under German pressure.

1951-  *Korean War: * United Nations troops recapture Seoul for the second time.

1967- The body of *U.S. President John F. Kennedy* is moved to a permanent burial place at Arlington National Cemetery.

1978- The Israel Defense Forces launch  *Operation Litani,* a seven-day campaign to invade and occupy southern Lebanon.

1995 - *Norman Thagard* becomes the first American astronaut to ride to space on board a Russian launch vehicle.

1998 - *Sonia Gandhi* first became the Congress President.

2007- *The Nandigram violence* occurred  in Nandigram, West Bengal.

2017- A *naming ceremony* for the *chemical element nihonium* takes place in Tokyo, with then Crown Prince Naruhito in attendance.

1965 - *Anuradha Patel* is an Indian actress. She is the maternal grand daughter of famous Hindi actor Ashok Kumar. She is married to actor Kanwaljit Singh. 

1967- *Vijay Yadav* is a former cricketer. A wicketkeeper and an aggressive lower-order batsman, Yadav played 19 One Day Internationals from 1992 to 1994 and appeared once for India in Test cricket.

1972- *Irom Chanu Sharmila,* also popularly called ‘the Iron Lady’ or ‘Mengoubi’, is a civil rights activist, political activist, and poet from Manipur.

1973- *Rohit Shetty* is an Indian film director and producer who is popularly known for his action hits.

Significance of 01st July:

National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on 1st July all over India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
